ONT – Brief definition

Optical Network Termination (ONT) – commonly referred to as a fiber optic box or fiber modem – is the term for the termination point of the fiber optic network in the home. The ONT box converts the light signals from the fiber into electrical signals that can then be processed by the router.

When the signal from a fiber optic line arrives at the customer's demarcation point, it is initially unusable because it is an optical signal. To make it usable for the router – and thus for the end customer – a type of intermediary is needed, the ONT.

What is an ONT and what types are there?

An active ONT has a power connection and converts the light signals from the fiber optic into electrical signals. Therefore, it is also referred to as a fiber optic modem. The active ONT has a standard LAN output and can thus be directly connected to a WiFi router.


Unlike an active ONT, a passive ONT does not convert the light pulses without a power connection. It is connected via a fiber optic cable to a fiber optic modem or a fiber optic router, which ultimately converts the signal.

ONT and Router Connection

A house connection point along with the ONT is usually located in the basement – while the router is in the living area. Therefore, the distance between the ONT and the router often needs to be bridged using a long LAN cable or, more conveniently, with the devolo Giga Bridge .


Placing the WiFi router directly next to the ONT in the basement is generally not advisable. The reason: basement ceilings and walls significantly dampen the WiFi, negating the benefits of a new high-speed fiber optic connection. With the Giga Bridge, however, the router can remain exactly where it is needed: in the center of the living area.
