devolo is opening the door to a new era of high-speed networking with its new Powerline generation based on G.hn. The company is the first European provider of technology ever to rely on the second-generation G.hn chips.

  • What exactly is G.hn?
  • What are the advantages compared to dLAN (HomePlug AV2)?

What exactly is G.hn?

G.hn is a technical standard developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and supported by numerous organisations, including the HomeGrid Forum industrial association.

The update to G.hn means that the speed in the Powerline backbone has been increased enormously (currently as high as 2400 Mbps). The update also features improved stability and a greater PLC range of up to 500 metres.

What are the advantages compared to dLAN (HomePlug AV2)?

Due to the continuously growing power requirements in the home network, such as those for 8K streaming and VR gaming, devolo has decided that, for its new Magic products, it will no longer rely on the HomePlug AV2 standard used in current dLAN devices (direct Local Area Network). Instead, these products will rely on the new and significantly faster G.hn standard.

This means:

  • Significant speed boost—currently by 100 percent
  • Greater stability
  • Increased range

That is why the Magic adapters based on G.hn are ideal for your home network. Thanks to the new standard, users are perfectly equipped, even for the high-performance applications of the future.

G.hn and mesh—a perfect combination for the ideal home network

All devolo Magic series WiFi adapters offer mesh WiFi, which means completely new and improved WiFi functions:

Fast Roaming

Fast roaming ensures that all WiFi clients, such as smartphones and tablets, are always connected to the strongest WiFi hotspot. This is especially important when people move from room to room with their mobile devices.

Airtime Fairness

The new air-time fairness feature (as the name indicates) processes the requests of high-speed WiFi clients more fairly. This prevents older devices, which may require more time for a download, from creating WiFi bottlenecks.

Bandsteering

Integrated band steering ensures that all WiFi clients automatically switch to the frequency band (2.4 or 5 GHz) that is optimal for them to guarantee that they are always using the best WiFi connection.

Even greater comfort, convenience and security

Users also benefit from greater comfort and convenience in the process of installing and setting up the new Magic products. Once they are plugged in, the new devolo Magic adapters based on G.hn automatically connect to each other and immediately form an encrypted network based on the 128-bit AES standard (Advanced Encryption Standard). This means your new high-speed home network is protected against data thieves and prying eyes.
