Target Wake Time – Brief definition

Target Wake Time (TWT) ensures that devices spend more time in standby mode and send and receive their data more efficiently. This reduces energy consumption and increases overall efficiency in the home network.

Many commonly used everyday devices frequently communicate with the internet. However, not every WiFi-enabled home network client needs to constantly send and receive data, and thus be ready for immediate access at all times. This is where Target Wake Time (TWT) comes into play.

What does Target Wake Time mean?

Target Wake Time allows devices to decide when and how often to wake up to receive or send data. Access Points of the WiFi 6 standard enable smarter management of data streams and a lower energy consumption.

Because Access Points and WiFi clients also agree on specific communication times through TWT, corresponding devices can better avoid each other and send their data alternately rather than simultaneously. This further increases overall home network efficiency and is particularly beneficial for an economical, stable Smart Home with many IoT devices that only sporadically send and receive data.
