What is a Guest WiFi?

A Guest WiFi is a separate, isolated internet access with limited functionality in your network. It runs over the same router but uses its own IP address. Friends and guests of the house can comfortably use the internet without having access to the actual network environment and the associated devices.

What are the advantages of a guest WiFi?

1. Security

When you set up a guest WiFi, it increases the security of your entire home network. Who is liable for a WiFi guest access?

Do you, as the operator of a guest WiFi, have to take responsibility if a guest misuses your internet access (knowingly or unknowingly) for dubious purposes?

The good news: No, you don't have to officially. As reported by the Consumer Center, the so-called liability for WLAN operators has been legally abolished since 2017. Legally, entrepreneurs and private individuals who provide their WiFi to others are not liable for any (copyright) infringements, such as illegal file sharing on the internet.

The risk of a guest WiFi is therefore low, but you cannot be completely absolved of responsibility: If repeated violations of intellectual property occur from your home network, the respective rights holder may require you to implement technical measures such as blocking certain URLs, IP addresses, and ports in the router settings to restrict access to unauthorized content.
