What are the advantages of a guest WiFi?
1. Security
When you set up a guest WiFi, it increases the
security of your entire home network.
Your guests can access the internet, but not the router configuration, shared folders, printers, or other parts of the network. In the worst-case scenario, if malware is present on a guest's smartphone, it cannot easily spread to your home network and infect other devices.
In short: Your guests can use the WiFi without potentially jeopardizing the data archive containing family photos, confidential home office documents, or other aspects of your home network.
2. Convenience
With a guest network, you do not have to share your
private WiFi password
and simultaneously simplify the login process for your guests. This way, you can keep the main password as secure as possible without overwhelming your visitors with confusing, 20-character alphanumeric strings after dessert.
Our Tip:
The login process for guests is particularly easy via a QR code, which can be generated by some router models and
WiFi extenders from devolo
3. Control
If you want to be very precise, you can even specify which websites guests can visit through your WiFi – or rather, which they cannot. You often also have the option to assign maximum bandwidths to your primary and guest WiFi.
This way, you can limit the speed at which your guests browse if they might otherwise overload the network.
