Wi-Fi for your garage and garden

devolo

A smart and networked home does not stop at its walls. From wall boxes and updates for your car to security cameras and robotic lawn mowers, more and more devices require a stable Wi-Fi connection – even outside your own four walls. We explain how a home network can extend into your garage and even into your garden.

Wi-Fi outside your front door

When we think of Wi-Fi connections, initially we think of devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets or set-top boxes within our own four walls. Every homeowner knows, however, that a stable Internet connection is important even outside. State-of-the-art cars are kept up to date with over-the-air updates. Anyone who has an electric car with a smart wall box needs Wi-Fi for remote control and charge management. Smart security cameras transmit images and videos wirelessly. Wi-Fi is used to connect state-of-the-art garage door openers to a smart home and allow many robotic lawn mowers to navigate more reliably. The list of possible examples is long.

Wi-Fi in your garage

An ideal location for installing a Wi-Fi access point for your outdoor area is the garage. It usually provides a power supply and protection from the effects of weather. The necessity of a stable Wi-Fi connection, for example, arises from the aforementioned wall box as well as DIY projects. Anyone who uses the garage for home improvement projects might need an online connection for a 3D printer or for mobile devices to play tutorial videos or their playlist of choice.

Often, however, the Wi-Fi signal does not extend past the home's four walls into the garage. Thick walls or reinforced concrete block the wireless signal. This becomes a major problem if the Internet router – as in many homes – is installed far away from the garage in the basement or living room. One possible solution would be to route an Ethernet cable. But this option is just as laborious as it is expensive. Fortunately there are alternatives.

Powerline for a networked garage

One particularly practical solution is to use Powerline products, such as the Magic product series from devolo. These are Powerline adapters that are easily plugged into household sockets and then connect client devices to the home network via either Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi, depending on the model. Installation does not require any special knowledge. A Powerline adapter is installed near the Internet router and connected to it via an Ethernet cable. Then the power line is ready to act as a data highway. Adding another Powerline adapter turns any power socket into a potential network jack or a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Powerline technology is particularly suitable for home network connection to a garage because it is significantly easier and above all less expensive than installing new wiring, and at the same time it cancels out the typical weaknesses of Wi-Fi repeaters. Walls and ceilings impact the Powerline connection as little as water lines and long distances. The connection is stable via the power line. This is how devolo Magic brings strong Wi-Fi to your garage that extends all the way to the garden.

Repeaters for better outdoor Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi repeaters are another option. They increase the range of the existing Wi-Fi, so they can include the garage and garden, too. It is important to understand, however, that a repeater can only "extend" the Wi-Fi quality that it receives. So if your home's Wi-Fi is already weak at the doorbell, the repeater should be placed closer to the Wi-Fi router so that it receives a good signal and can "repeat" this. In other words, to find the right solution for your own garage or garden, first you have to examine the specific conditions.

Tailored solutions from devolo

Both ways of achieving fast Wi-Fi in your garage and garden are available from the German network expert devolo. The major advantage of devolo is that all current products are compatible with each other and the network can be expanded at any time. This allows for a customised solution that is the perfect fit for your individual application scenarios. If you're new to Powerline, an example of a good beginning point is the devolo Magic 1 WiFi Starter Kit (GBP 134.99). For more advanced setups, the first choice is the devolo Magic 2 WiFi 6 Starter Kit (GBP 219.99) with Wi-Fi 6 power and two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

A good choice for extending the signal range with a repeater is the devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 3000 (GBP 89.99) or the cost-effective devolo WiFi 5 Repeater 1200 (GBP 49.99).
