devolo at eWorld 2011: Innovative communication solutions for smart metering
With powerline products for smart grid and smart metering applications, devolo AG is presenting its innovative solutions for sustainable use of resources at the eWorld Energy & Water. Held in Essen, Germany, it is one of Europe‘s leading trade fairs in the energy and water industry—with a strong focus on smart energy. In Hall 7, which is devoted entirely to this topic, devolo is showing complete powerline-based solutions for energy providers and municipal utilities. As the highlight, the Aachen-based company and development partner iEqualize are unveiling the second generation of the UNIEQ-Box, an innovative smart metering solution for end customers that presents consumption data in visually appealing graphics on the iPhone or iPad.
Interactive communication with the customer is the key to future-proof and profitable business models in the power industry. To implement smart grid concepts, devolo is presenting innovative dLAN® products at the eWorld Energy & Water 2011, being held in Essen from 8 to 10 February 2011. With its Smart Grid division, the Aachen-based powerline expert has listened intently to the needs of the target group, made up of energy suppliers and municipal utilities. In response, it is presenting solutions that have been tried and tested in the real world that can be installed quickly and with only low investment costs per metering point.
Innovative complete solutions for energy providers and municipal utilities
devolo‘s dLAN® technology is the link between the power industry and telecommunications infrastructure. It uses the household electrical wiring—the power line—for networking, making complicated new wiring unnecessary. dLAN® thus assumes a critical role for smart metering, as the technology creates a cost-effective, stable and secure in-house connection. devolo offers energy providers and municipal utilities complete, IP-based monitoring solutions for all types of energy according to the Open Metering specification. This makes it possible to ensure that all energy segments, including electrical water, gas and BTU data, are collected. This provides a basis for efficient smart metering that not only offers its operators comprehensive monitoring of the networks, but is also an ideal tool for customer retention. In addition, this makes it possible to implement new and attractive rate and business models to gain new customers.
devolo is aware of the great effort and expense presented by installing the smart meters. In response, it has developed a PLC solution for this application that can be implemented easily and quickly as part of meter replacement: the dLAN® DIN rail adapter. This makes the integration for each metering point time and cost-efficient. Simultaneously, the powerline expert also offers development of special PLC hardware for major customers, so that the ideal solution is found for each metering scenario.
UNIEQ-Box: Energy monitoring with smart phones & tablet computers
In conjunction with Leipzig-based remote maintenance specialist iEqualize, devolo is presenting a smart metering solution that enables comprehensive presentation of the energy data in a way suited to end customers. The UNIEQ-Box uses an appealing graphical visualisation that can be used on almost all Web-enabled devices. An app for Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch or devices with the Google Android operating system is available as an alternative to classic monitoring via a Web interface. Developed as a fully enclosed solution, the UNIEQ system also takes care of transmitting the energy data from the meter to the customer. The UNIEQ package consists of a smart meter with IEQ PLC module, the UNIEQ-Box and comprehensive software for visualising the energy consumption values.
"We are confident that powerline has a great role to play in the decentralised energy network, the smart grid. This communication solution has proven itself in real-world use, both in-house and network-wide. It has shown itself to be a reliable key technology that also enables successive and cost-efficient setup," remarks Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo AG. "We are presenting our solutions for the power industry at the eWorld in Essen, as the fair is the ideal venue for introducing our innovative products to international contacts."
