General dLAN® FAQs
Show all
Does the devolo dLAN® adapter have to be plugged directly into the wall socket, or can it also be plugged into an extension or (switched) power strip?
Yes. In rare cases, power strips with integrated surge protectors can impair performance; therefore, devolo recommends plugging the dLAN® adapter directly into a wall outlet.
Up
Is the electric meter a natural boundary of the dLAN® network? Can my neighbour intrude on my network?
Only in rare cases does the electric meter attenuate the signal to that extent. Therefore, for security reasons, we recommend that you always use the device's internal encryption. Enable it by entering a password other than the factory password or using the encryption button.
Up
Do I have to bypass my RCD device because it does not allow the dLAN® signal to pass?
No, only in rare cases do RCD devices cause minor impairments of performance. It is imperative not to bypass an RCD device, as RCD devices are prescribed by law.
Up
Do I need an Internet connection for dLAN® adapters? Does dLAN® provide Internet from the wall outlet?
dLAN® adapters transfer the existing signal to the power line, but cannot replace Internet access from a provider. dLAN® allows you to make optimum use of your existing Internet connection, as every wall outlet can become an Internet access point.
Up
Does dLAN® overload my power grid?
No. dLAN® adapters consume very little power and thus cannot overload the power grid.
Up
Is dLAN® allowed?
All dLAN® devices are CE certified and thus entirely legal to operate.
Up
My house has three separate phases. Can dLAN® also establish a connection from one phase to another?
Yes. This is known as phase coupling, and in dLAN® devices, it works without the need to install an additional phase coupler. This means that you can also establish network connections via two or three phases.
Up
Does dLAN® work even if my house is very old?
Yes, dLAN® adapters function very well, even in old houses.
Up
Does dLAN® interfere with amateur radio or broadcast radio reception?
No. dLAN® adapters transmit data in the frequency band from 2-30 MHz with an extremely low signal strength, amateur radio frequencies in this range are not used by the dLAN® adapters.
Up
Can I operate my dLAN® device with a device from another manufacturer?
All dLAN® devices conform to the HomePlug standards, HomePlug 1.0 and HomePlug AV. Other devices that conform to the same standard as your dLAN® adapter can also be operated with dLAN® adapters. You can tell when a device conforms to the HomePlug standard by these symbols on the package: HomePlug 1.0 and HomePlug AV.

Will 500 Mbps HomePlug AV adapters be available in 2010? And is it worthwhile to purchase existing 200 Mbps devices now?
No timeline has been determined yet for the release of the 500 Mbps adapter. Therefore, it is absolutely worthwhile to purchase 200 Mbps devices, as devolo dLAN® 400 Mbps adapters will be fully compatible to the existing dLAN® 200 AV series.
Up
Does the dLAN® adapter switch to power-save mode when there is no traffic?
"No, the dLAN® adapters switch to power-save mode if no Ethernet link (an electrical signal) is present. Thus they switch over whenever either:
- No Ethernet cable is plugged in.
- The connected device is switched off (PCs with Wake on LAN function can be an exception).
- The connected device stops providing the Ethernet link.

Can I configure my DS2 device to be compatible with my HomePlug Devices?
Even if some devices offer such a configuration option, tests indicate clearly that they are still not compatible with HomePlug. Particularly when they are located close to each other.

Does devolo also offer MAC and Linux support for products with MAC and Linux logos on the packaging?
Yes. Of course. No in-depth MAC or Linux skills are required (nor are they for Windows).
