One of the biggest challenges to the power industry during the next several years belongs to a wide-ranging topic that goes by the name of "automated meter reading", also known as "smart metering". Since the 1st January 2010, newly constructed and completely renovated households must be equipped with electronic meters for electricity and gas. In addition to this, the EC directive 2002/91/EC requires that all customers be offered the option of electronic meter reading recording.
With dLAN® technology, devolo offers an ideal foundation for efficiently realising smart metering solutions for consumers. Energy providers can connect the individual electronic measurement devices in a building via dLAN®, then bundle and send the data to their data processing centres. Because dLAN® uses the building's internal electrical wiring for networking, it requires no complicated installation measures—dLAN® can be installed in parallel with the new meters in no time. The consumer can then view their meter readings via a Web interface and as such can always keep informed of their energy usage. In this segment, devolo has already designed, developed and realised such project solutions for several large companies.
As a partner in the EU DLC+VIT4IP project, devolo AG pursues the goal of Powerline communication for new and intelligent applications in the energy network, for instance monitoring network status or consumption. A most important focus in this regard is researching, implementing and evaluating an IP-based narrowband high-speed Powerline communication infrastructure.
